Transit Equity Day is observed annually on February 4, to commemorate the life and legacy of Civil Rights leader Rosa Parks on her birthday and her unfinished work to end inequities in transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThroughout our country\u2019s history, communities of color and\nother vulnerable communities have faced barriers to reliable public\ntransportation while also being disproportionately impacted by the harmful air\npollution caused by transportation,\u201d said Connecticut Department of Transportation\nCommissioner Joseph Giulietti. \u201cReliable, public transportation is an essential\npart of daily life for many residents, and I\u2019m honored to help support Governor\nLamont\u2019s efforts to better connect communities with clean transportation across\nConnecticut.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transportation is the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the state of Connecticut.\u00a0In December, Governor Lamont signed an\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/Office-of-the-Governor\/News\/Press-Releases\/2021\/12-2021\/Governor-Lamont-Signs-Executive-Order-Directing-Connecticut-State-Agencies-To-Implement-Actions\">Executive Order<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0directing the CTDOT and all other state agencies to take meaningful actions to reduce carbon emissions. Under the Executive Order, CTDOT can no longer purchase or use state funds to purchase diesel buses after 2023 and must create a roadmap for electrifying the state\u2019s bus fleet by 2035.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The State of Connecticut recently launched\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/DOT\/News-from-the-Connecticut-Department-of-Transportation\/2022\/Gov-Lamont-Announces-CTpass-Offering-Organizations-Group-Rates-to-Access-Public-Trans\">CT<\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/DOT\/News-from-the-Connecticut-Department-of-Transportation\/2022\/Gov-Lamont-Announces-CTpass-Offering-Organizations-Group-Rates-to-Access-Public-Trans\">pass<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, a program that offers group rates to eligible organizations to access public transportation services throughout Connecticut, including rail and bus systems. Additionally, the state has created a\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/portal.ct.gov\/DOT\/News-from-the-Connecticut-Department-of-Transportation\/2021\/Governor-Lamont-Announces-Pilot-Program-Offering-Virtual-Mobility-Assistance\">mobility assistance pilot program<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0to help those who are blind or have low vision use public transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transit operators throughout Connecticut, including CT<em>transit<\/em>, will be recognizing Transit Equity Day, with a rose and memorial seat reserved in honor of Rosa Parks, and access to more information about the purpose of Transit Equity Day.
