SUMMARY:Hartford Public High School: the First Fifty Years by R.J. Luke Williams
DESCRIPTION:The Hartford Grammar School\, which had a long history dating back to the school started by Thomas Hooker in 1638\, was the secondary school for young men in Hartford until 1847. In that year\, school leaders\, influenced by the ideas of Henry Barnard\, himself a graduate of the HGS\, decided to bring together the English Course of the First District School and the Classical Course of the HGS and rename the school the “Hartford Public High School\,” but it was also called the “English and Classical High School.” It was “public” in the sense that both men and women could enroll. It was a bold move\, preceded by much agitation\, but it made Hartford stand out as urbane\, cosmopolitan\, and progressive. This presentation will explore what HPHS was about in the early years: the composition of the student body\, the curriculum\, and its governance. DESCRIPTION:The principle and practice of popular election lies at the very heart of American democracy. But who gets to vote for our political leaders? The answer to that question has changed over the years here in Connecticut. Originally\, voting was limited to men of property. The 1818 State Constitution then added the word “white” in describing eligible voters. Not until the passage of the 15th Amendment could Connecticut men of color vote again.  Women had to wait until 1920 and ratification of the 19th Amendment to gain that same right. Even for those who had access to the polls\, the process could be complicated. For instance\, Connecticut required literacy tests of voters between 1855 and 1970. Current national debates about voting reveal ongoing questions and differences of opinion. SUMMARY:Turning the Tides of Justice: The Amistad Trial at CT’s Old State House
DESCRIPTION:In September of 1839\, the Amistad captives appeared for the first time in a formal court during trials held at Connecticut’s Old State House. Finally\, the Africans were able to have the platform to tell their story and defend their actions on board the schooner Amistad. In the course of the trials held here\, the piracy and murder charges against the Africans were dropped and the focus of the case became the status of the captured Africans’ freedom.\nJoin us for a special commemoration of the Amistad trials and their importance. Come early and take a tour of the Amistad\, which is currently moored in Hartford.

Concerts will also be live-streamed on our Facebook page and YouTube channel! \nNo tickets or reservations needed to attend this free concert at Connecticut’s Old State House. \nFeel free to bring a picnic\, some lawn games\, and even your dog and enjoy the summer concerts! \nAbout the Artist:Fronted by Nelson Bello\, his eponymous Latin Jazz Trio enjoys performing their Afro-Cuban and Caribbean-flavored jazz.A well-known Latin percussionist and Hartford native\, Nelson began his musical studies at the Hartford Conservatory Jazz Summer Program at the age of 13 and the Performing Arts Academy in Hartford. At the age of 15\, he traveled to Cuba for the International Jazz Festival (with Latin Flavor\, now better known as Insight) and invited guest pianist Chucho Valdez.Over the years\, Nelson performed with the likes of Andy Gonzalez\, Cheo Feliciano\, Ismael Miranda\, Tony Vega\, Charles Flores\, Zaccai\, and Luques Curtis\, among others. \nAbout the Summer Concert Series:The Summer Concert Series at Connecticut’s Old State House is sponsored by the Richard P. The Kenn Morr Band enthralls audiences of all sizes\, from intimate coffeehouses to the stages of venues as demanding as the famed Bitter End in New York City and the International Festival of Arts and Ideas on the New Haven Green. They feature violin virtuoso and multi-instrumentalist Tom Hagymasi and melodic bassist/vocalist Pat Ryan\, a graduate of the Berklee College of Music. The group has been together for many years\, becoming fast favorites on the outdoor festival scene\, and often features noted drummer Tido Holtkamp. They’ve paid dues of every kind and played gigs of every stripe along the way while sharing the stage with artists like John Sebastian\, Al Kooper\, Eric Burdon\, and John Wesley Harding.About the Summer Concert Series:The Summer Concert Series at Connecticut’s Old State House is sponsored by the Richard P.
