SUMMARY:Turning the Tides of Justice: The Amistad Trial at CT’s Old State House
DESCRIPTION:In September of 1839\, the Amistad captives appeared for the first time in a formal court during trials held at Connecticut’s Old State House. Finally\, the Africans were able to have the platform to tell their story and defend their actions on board the schooner Amistad. In the course of the trials held here\, the piracy and murder charges against the Africans were dropped and the focus of the case became the status of the captured Africans’ freedom.\nJoin us for a special commemoration of the Amistad trials and their importance. Come early and take a tour of the Amistad\, which is currently moored in Hartford.

Carabello is a product of the Artist’s Collective Youth Jazz Orchestra under master artist in resident Rene McLean\, as well as the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz.Mike has worked with bassist Nat Reeves\, drummer Ronnie Burrage\, saxophonist Rene McLean\, trombonist Steve Davis\, bassist Matt Dwonszyk\, and has studied piano under pianists Rick Germanson\, Andy Laverne\, and Alan Palmer.He has performed at the White House for First Lady Michelle Obama\, The Ninth Note Jazz Club\, Black-Eyed Sally’s Jazz Club\, The Side Door Jazz Club\, and the New Haven “On the Green” Jazz Festival\, to name a few. DESCRIPTION:The principle and practice of popular election lies at the very heart of American democracy. But who gets to vote for our political leaders? The answer to that question has changed over the years here in Connecticut. Originally\, voting was limited to men of property. The 1818 State Constitution then added the word “white” in describing eligible voters. Not until the passage of the 15th Amendment could Connecticut men of color vote again.  Women had to wait until 1920 and ratification of the 19th Amendment to gain that same right. Even for those who had access to the polls\, the process could be complicated. For instance\, Connecticut required literacy tests of voters between 1855 and 1970. Current national debates about voting reveal ongoing questions and differences of opinion. It’s aroma\, texture\, burn\, and size help to create a boutique industry that became an important part of Connecticut lore and romance. Whether they were students recruited from historically black colleges or along the eastern seaboard\, West Indians and Puerto Ricans from the Caribbean\, or local day haul and summer workers\, tobacco culture touched many lives. SUMMARY:Hartford Public High School: the First Fifty Years by R.J. Luke Williams
DESCRIPTION:The Hartford Grammar School\, which had a long history dating back to the school started by Thomas Hooker in 1638\, was the secondary school for young men in Hartford until 1847. In that year\, school leaders\, influenced by the ideas of Henry Barnard\, himself a graduate of the HGS\, decided to bring together the English Course of the First District School and the Classical Course of the HGS and rename the school the “Hartford Public High School\,” but it was also called the “English and Classical High School.” It was “public” in the sense that both men and women could enroll. It was a bold move\, preceded by much agitation\, but it made Hartford stand out as urbane\, cosmopolitan\, and progressive. This presentation will explore what HPHS was about in the early years: the composition of the student body\, the curriculum\, and its governance. SUMMARY:Conversations at Noon on the CT Freedom Trail: The Amistad Affair
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Event – register here: \nIn 1839 Connecticut’s Old State House was the site of the first of the famous Amistad trials. The trials grabbed international headlines\, but after the US Supreme Court resolved the case in 1841\, the story faded from collective memory. In1997\, Steven Spielberg reintroduced the dramatic Amistad incident to the world\, sparking new interest among historians\, educators\, and the public. Since then\, new research has shed light on the story and corrected some of the omissions and errors in the public’s knowledge.  \nTammy Denease\, Connecticut Freedom Trail Outreach Director\, has studied the life journey of Margu\, one of four children held captive on the Amistad. Tammy will share her remarkable story through a first-person recorded portrayal of Margu. Charles Warner\, Jr.\, Chair of the CT Freedom Trail\, will then lead a discussion with Tammy and Adrienne Joy Burns\, who has studied the history of enslavement in New Haven with a focus on the Pardee-Morris House.  \nThis discussion will focus on facts surrounding the Amistad Incident that were not included in the 1997 Steven Spielberg film.

DESCRIPTION:Today’s headlines are filled with arguments over restrictions on the right to vote and attempts to expand it. Miles Rapoport\, formerly CT’s Secretary of State and E.J. Dionne\, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institute\, advocate for making a commitment to a ‘100% Democracy’\, an election process where every citizen has the right to vote and full opportunities to do so—but also the duty to vote\, a requirement to participate in our national choices.Join Rapoport and Dionne (who will be joining us virtually) for an in-person discussion about their new book\, 100% Democracy: The Case for Universal Voting. The program will be moderated by CT Secretary of the State\, Denise Merrill and kicks off Book Talks\, a new program series at Connecticut’s Old State House.The U.S. lags behind other democracies\, with only 66.8% of eligible voters participating in the record-turnout election of 2020 while twenty-six countries around the world require participation in elections. Australia\, for instance\, has required citizens to cast a ballot since 1924 and had over 90% voter turnout in their last major election. Rapoport and Dionne ask: if Americans must pay taxes and serve on juries\, why not ask—or require—every American to vote? Is it time for the United States to take a major leap forward and recognize voting as both a fundamental civil right and a solemn civic duty?The program will be followed by a book-signing and light refreshments. DESCRIPTION:The Mary and Eliza Freeman Houses in Bridgeport serve a critical role in the history of Bridgeport and of the Black community in Connecticut. Their homes became the center of Little Liberia – a neighborhood of free people of color that included a luxurious seaside resort hotel for wealthy Blacks\, Bridgeport’s first free lending library\, a school\, businesses\, fraternal organizations\, and churches. From this community\, only the Mary and Eliza Freeman homes survive.Join the Connecticut Freedom Trail and Maisa Tisdale\, President and CEO of The Mary & Eliza Freeman Center\, who has advocated for the preservation of the homes and the former Little Libera neighborhood in Bridgeport’s South End since 1994.
