DESCRIPTION:On September 22\, 1780\, General George Washington and Comte de Rochambeau met for the first time in Hartford\, on the very land where Connecticut’s Old State House stands today. Their meeting forged the French-American alliance that helped turn the tide of the Revolution. Two hundred and forty-six years later — on that same September date — K–12 educators are invited to gather on that same site to explore the full\, complex story of that first meeting and the complexities of freedom and the American Revolution. \n  \nJoin Connecticut’s Old State House and George Washington’s Mount Vernon for a free\, day-long educator workshop featuring: \nDr. Anthony Martin (Central Connecticut State University) who will examine Washington and Rochambeau not only as military leaders fighting for freedom\, but as enslavers. \nBrenda Haenchen (George Washington Teacher Institute 250 Ambassador)\, who will share an array of classroom-ready resources from Mount Vernon and the George Washington Teacher Institute\, including primary sources and lesson plans developed by teachers across the country. \nGuided outdoor walking tour exploring Hartford’s and Connecticut’s Revolutionary War history. \nA visit to Connecticut’s Revolution\, the Museum of Connecticut History’s new exhibit that examines our state’s role in the founding of the United States and showcases treasures from the Connecticut State Library’s rich collections. \nLunch and materials provided at no cost. DESCRIPTION:It’s time for some sweet competition! Connecticut’s Old State House is pleased to host its 5th Annual Election Cake Bake Off. Connecticut pastry chefs and bakers will go whisk to whisk to have their confection crowned the official Connecticut Election Cake of 2026. \nElection Day in Connecticut once combined voting with parties\, libations\, parades\, and cake! Stores sold special Election Cake ingredients to women who transformed them into spice cakes to serve to the crowds gathered to celebrate voting at the State House and other sites. Help us revive this long-lost Connecticut tradition! “Election Day Cakes are a great Connecticut tradition—and a sweet reminder that voting is something to celebrate with both pride and community spirit\,” says Stephanie Thomas\, Secretary of the State. “I’m especially excited to join our Kid Governor and Cabinet. Their passion for civic engagement and cake judging skills make them the perfect partners for this delicious celebration.” \nConnecticut’s Old State House has invited professional pastry chefs and bakers to create the official Connecticut Election Cake for 2026. Each competitor is challenged to create a delectable\, non-partisan\, election-themed cake that inspires voters and celebrates American democracy. Cakes will be judged based on presentation\, creativity\, and taste by a panel of judges. The winner of the bake off will be bestowed the honor of baking the cake for the annual birthday celebration of Connecticut’s Old State House in 2026.
