He was the first African American to serve as a U.S diplomat anywhere in the world. His was a life of civil service, diplomacy, education, and activism in a time where African Americans were making strides breaking barriers in politics and government. He was also the first Black student to attended the Connecticut Normal School, now Central Connecticut State University.
