Delany wins in special election, puts another Democrat in state legislature representing Stamford

STAMFORD — Democrat Hubert Delany won the special election for the state House’s 144th District seat, which opened up after Caroline Simmons was elected the city’s mayor in November.

According to unofficial results, Delany, a 28-year-old U.S. Army public affairs adviser and member of Simmons’ transition team, defeated Republican Danny Melchionne, a 33-year-old registered respiratory therapist and personal trainer, 56 percent to 44 percent.

“We won!” a jubilant Delany yelled to his supporters as they gathered at the Stamford Democratic City Committee headquarters.
