Conversations at Noon on the Connecticut Freedom Trail – Enslaved for Life: Reexamining Connecticut’s Prince Mortimer

August 22, 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

On this month’s Conversations at Noon on the Connecticut Freedom Trail we are joined by John Mills, a software designer who has done extensive research into the fascinating life of Connecticut’s Prince Mortimer and his 11 decades of enslavement.
Born in Guinea in the early 1700s, Prince Mortimer was captured and brought to Connecticut to be sold into slavery. He spent the rest of his very long life in bondage, dying at over 100 years of age. In his lecture, John Mills traces his path in discovering his own ties to slavery, what it taught him about himself and the challenges he faced while searching for his ancestors’ burial sites. He marries his experiences and revelations to the story of Connecticut’s Prince Mortimer.
John Mills’ intent is to bring light to the largely untold story of Prince, while at the same time evaluating the ripple effects of a past time. This event is FREE and open to the general public.
