Hartford History Lecture Series: Hartford’s Cemeteries & Burying Grounds: Where Art & History Meet

September 28, 2023 @ 5:45 pm - 7:00 pm

Thursday, September 28th

5:45pm-7:00pm

Hartford’s cemeteries and burying grounds are a gold mine for the study of local history, folk art, and statuary. Gravestones and monuments, from 1648 to the present, cover the length and breadth of the American. These veritable museums without walls are an ideal starting point for exploring the individuals and eras that shaped Hartford’s development – from a small port settlement on the frontier to one of the great urban centers of the Gilded Age. This program will take you on an adventure from the Ancient Burying Ground, on Main Street – to the epic beauty of Cedar Hill Cemetery in the south end to the final resting place of Catholics and Jews. Local history is living history. These burial places are truly where art and history meet.
