Connecticut native Ebenezer Don Carlos Bassett was the U.S. Ambassador to Haiti from 1869 to 1877. He was the first African American to serve as a U.S diplomat anywhere in the world. His was a life of civil service, diplomacy, education, and activism in a time where African Americans were making strides breaking barriers in politics and government. He was also the first Black student to attended the Connecticut Normal School, now Central Connecticut State University. Join Counselor William Fothergill as he shares the story of his fellow CCSU alum and the making of the first Black US diplomat.
