Stonington Middle School, Stonington

Congratulations to Stonington Middle School for their recognized project, Public Safety, Service & Health in Stonington. Eighth-grade students enrolled in this semester-long Encore elective engaged directly with representatives from seven municipal departments—including Police, Fire, Emergency Management, Human Services, Public Works, Recreation, and the Selectmen’s Office—to explore how local government shapes daily life in their community. Over 25 days, students participated in hands-on experiences such as mock 911 calls, CPR training on mannequins, de-escalation exercises, town beautification projects, and parade logistics planning. They launched the course with an inquiry-based scavenger hunt on Stonington’s official town website, developed their own questions for each department, and led meaningful dialogue with guest speakers from across local government. Students also analyzed primary documents including town meeting minutes and official municipal resources. As a culminating project, each student created a public service announcement to share what they learned and amplify civic awareness among their peers.
